When a Muslim dies, it is a fard kifāyah (communal
obligation) upon the community that he or she should be buried. Before the
burial, a special prayer is made for the dead person. This prayer, which is
offered in a different manner than the regular prayers, is called the Janāzah
prayer. The details of how to perform this prayer are readily available in
English in various books and pamphlets.
