Islamic Glossary: Entry Format

Line 1: The word is in bold-type, followed by its single or plural form (as indicated) after the vertical bar. On the right side is the Arabic script of the word, if available.
Line 2: Alternate spellings of the word and its plural (separated again by the vertical bar).
Line 3: Phonetic pronunciation of the word, transliterated into English as faithfully as possible (following the transliteration scheme of Taleem-ul-Islam Online project).
Line 4: Is the definition and explanation of the word. Literal English translation is given in "double quotes" followed by specific meanings of the word in the Islamic context. Other words in the glossary may be cross-linked in this text.
Line 5: "In the Qur'an" -- references to verses of the Qur'an where the term or its derivatives appear, if applicable.
Line 6: "See also" -- related words and terms, click on the links.
Line 7: "Related links" -- further links (possibly to external websites) with more in-depth information on the term.
Links at the top of each page take you to the previous or next pages or letter of the alphabet. Also available are direct links to the complete index of words and pages for the individual letters.

An account of the sayings, actions and any other characteristics of the Prophet Muhammad . A hadith consists of two parts: the sanad, which is the chain of names of people who have narrated the hadith through the generations, and the matn, or the actual text and substance of the report. Many books of hadith were compiled in the beginning eras of Islam and thus we have a good record of how Muslims should be leading their lives.

The term hadith is slightly more general than the term sunnah although the two are generally interchangeable. (Sunnah is not usually applied to physical characteristics of the Prophet.)
